For medical doctors treating HIV patients, ViroLab provides two features. ViroLab's main functionality is a drug ranking system, the DRS. The DRS ranks drugs for HIV patients on the input of the patients' virus mutations. The doctor can choose which of several rule sets - such as ANRS, HIVDB, or Rega - is applied for a ranking, and thus has distinct HIV research results at his disposal. ViroLab also provides a collaboration environment easing communication with other doctors and researchers in the field of infectious diseases.

Although the virtual laboratory organisation within ViroLab focuses on the decision support system supporting HIV treatment, it will also provide easy access for Healthcare Professionals to secure and distributed resources, tools, and data. This is very useful as representatives of this sector often have to use real data to conduct the testing new ideas and concepts. The most important advantage is that all sensitive data stays within the organisation and authorised users have access to it.

In addition, individual components of the virtual laboratory organisation provide potential exploitation opportunities for the companies of the Healthcare Industry. Once such scenario is the provisioning of an environment for creating complex experiment workflows using disparate Grid resources, federated security models and a mobile platform for remote access.

No computer scientific skills are required to use these features.
